Jordin Sparks Ef’d Up in a Big Way

Russell Brand, the host of this years MTV Video Music Awards, made fun of the stars who wear “promise rings” who include the Jonas Brothers and apparently, Jordin Sparks. Jordin Sparks obviously didn’t like what she heard, so when she took the stage she informed everyone that she wears a promise ring because not everyone wants to be a slut.

I believe in one micro-second slip of the tongue, Jordin did an amazing job of alienating a multitude of teens.

Perhaps it was a fleeting lapse in judgment, but it’s one that will likely follow her like the black plague for some time to come.

Not every teen chooses to have sex because they aspire to become a slut! Some teens have attachment issues, voids in their lives, a need to be needed, a desire to be loved and use what they have that feels like love.

I’m not exactly sure what the promise ring does really – As a married woman, I know I have a wedding ring on, but I don’t look at my hand every single day and it certainly doesn’t prevent me from messing up at any given time. I don’t even think it serves as a deterrent for men who hit on women, married or not. To be quite honest, I think some men, the hunters they are, see a wedding ring as a conquest to be conquered. I’m sure the same goes for the promise ring only on a more adolescent scale.

The values behind the promise ring, admirable as they may be, should be within a person and their desires, ring or not.

Rather than slapping a ring on my kids hand and hoping that it keeps them abstinent until marriage, I believe it’s better to provide kids with the love and attention they need and the value of self that makes them strong enough to say no.
