It should be lights out for The Dark Knight

by Gayla McCord on August 4th, 2008

In January 2008, as news of the tragic loss of Heath Ledger scrolled across the bottom of my television and news began to buzz around the internet, I remember a feeling of numbness pouring across me.

I liken the feeling to the age old stories shared by fans of Elvis when hearing of his passing.

While Heath may not have been The King of Rock-and-Roll, Heath Ledger was an actor I’d grown to admire immensely and adore implicitly.

Many from the conservative sector want to blame his demise on his participating roll in the gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain.  I, on the other hand, find it difficult not to blame his participating roll in The Dark Knight.  After all, it was that film he was working on when he met with such a tragic end.

I look at the images, like the one above, and find it hard to imagine having to ‘get into character’ to make the made-up persona come to life.

The vast number of images of Heath as Joker, in the newly released film are not the images I wanted to have fill my head when I remember one of my favorite actors.

How can an actor play such a part, look in the mirror and not feel some sort of dread?

Apparently the image shown here is what the world wanted.  It’s the one last buzz we’ll ever have of Heath Ledger and one that he gave his life to bring to his fans.

a knights tale

As for me?  I prefer to remember him in the roll of A Knight’s Tale - when he first became one of my few celebrity heartthrobs.

So for all those who have seen The Dark Knight - was it worth it?  Was it worth what it did to Heath Ledger?  Was it worth Hollywood losing one of it’s greats?  And was it worth a little girl losing her father?

Is the movie really that good?
