Soap Protest Favors Gay Kiss, Do You?

March 3, 2008 by Gayla McCord

The love affair between two young men on the 52-year-old CBS soap opera “As the World Turns” has triggered a protest campaign by angry viewers.

Fans of the fictional romance between Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer want to know why the pair haven’t kissed on-screen since last September and are questioning whether it has something to do with one of the shows primary sponsors, Proctor & Gamble.

The angry fans have even created a website that counts down to the exact minute since Luke and Noah last kissed.

I have to admit it’s nice to see a gay relationship that’s not girl on girl and catering to the age old fantasies of men.

As the World Turns was always one of my grandmother’s favorites – I’m just glad she’s not still around to see her favorite soap heading in a direction that would have surely put her on a never ending tangent – the kind she was so famous for.

Ok, now the question, should daytime television feature gay relationships and intimate scenes or should that be reserved for cable?

  1. Angela says:

If straight people can kiss, then so should gay people.

  2. Theresa says:

Television shows air things much more graphic then kisses when it comes to straight couples, why shouldn’t homosexual couples get the same treatment?

  3. Becca says:

Love is expressed through kisses and it shouldn’t matter what sexual orientation you are to express it! Love is love and in our world today, with all the hatred that exist, shouldn’t we embrace love wherever we can?

  4. Shawn says:

Luke and Noah have every right to kiss and show their love for each other, every bit as much as all the straight couples do.

This is America. Let people be who they want to be without prejudice, bigotry and hate.

  5. Champayne says:

Love is love and they should be able to express it the same way as a straight couple.

  6. Kim says:

These two characters are truly in love and committed to each other; they should be shown expressing that the way any straight couple on television would be. GLBT characters and relationships deserve equality.

  7. Liz says:

The more it appears on TV, the more accepted it will become. Waiting for the public’s approval for something like this is putting the cart before the horse. It took a ridiculous amount of time for Willow and Tara to kiss on Buffy, and I’d like to think we’ve come a long way in the past few years.

  8. Jooce Gossip says:

I thought soaps were already doing all the sexual orientations. hmmm.. I have to think about THAT one.

  9. for-casual-fun says:

    yeah, love is love

  10. Alexcie says:

Im 13 and i love this show i just started watching it last year. I think that noah and luke are a really cute couple and juding by what ive seen and what ive read its been awhile since they kissed and i think they should be able to express their love for one another in more ways than just looking into each others eyes.
